wa.me Link Not Working? Causes and Fixes for Every Symptom

Published · 7 min read

Most wa.me links that fail have the same cause: the phone number is not written the way WhatsApp expects. The correct format is https://wa.me/<number>, where the number is the full international number, digits only. Check that first, then work through the symptoms below.

This guide is organized as symptom, cause, fix. Find what you see on screen and jump to that section.

The correct format in one look

The official click to chat format is:

https://wa.me/34612345678

The number part follows these rules:

  • Full phone number in international format, starting with the country code.
  • Digits only. No plus sign, no brackets, no dashes, no spaces.
  • No zeros before the country code.
  • Maximum 15 digits including the country code.
  • The number must belong to a WhatsApp account. Both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business work.

If you want a message already typed in the chat, add ?text= and the URL-encoded text:

https://wa.me/34612345678?text=Hello%20there

If your link differs from this pattern in any way, fix that before anything else. If you would rather not build it by hand, the free WhatsApp link generator formats the number for you and gives you a QR code too.

Cause: the number is not in international format. This is the most common mistake. People paste the number the way they dial it locally, and WhatsApp cannot match it to an account.

Fix: convert the number to country code plus national number, digits only. Here are verified examples:

Country Local format Number for wa.me
Spain 612 345 678 34612345678
UK 07700 900123 447700900123
US (415) 555-0132 14155550132
Mexico (mobile) 55 1234 5678 525512345678
Argentina (mobile) 11 1234 5678 5491112345678

Argentina is a good example of a country where the number in the link differs from the one you dial: a 9 goes after the country code for mobile numbers. If your country has a mobile prefix that does not appear in the local way of writing the number, compare your result with the examples above. Then open the link yourself and confirm it lands on the right chat.

Cause: you wrote https://wa.me/+34612345678. The plus sign is how numbers are often displayed on business cards and websites, but it does not belong in a wa.me link.

Fix: remove it.

Wrong: https://wa.me/+34612345678
Right: https://wa.me/34612345678

The same applies to the format wa.me/00 34.... Double zeros are another way of writing the plus sign on some dialing systems, and they should not appear before the country code either.

Symptom: spaces, dashes or brackets in the number

Cause: the number was copied from a contact card, a website footer or an email signature, and the formatting came with it. Examples: 34 612 345 678, 1 (415) 555-0132, +44-7700-900123.

Fix: strip everything that is not a digit. Paste the number into a plain text editor, delete spaces, dashes and brackets, and remove the plus sign. For the US example, 1 (415) 555-0132 becomes 14155550132.

A quick check: the final number should contain only the characters 0 to 9. If you see anything else, the link is not clean.

Symptom: UK or other numbers with a leading zero fail

Cause: many countries write the national number with a leading zero (the trunk prefix), for example UK 07700 900123. That zero is only used when dialing within the country. It does not belong after the country code.

Fix: drop the leading zero and put the country code in front.

07700 900123  ->  447700900123
Link: https://wa.me/447700900123

A common variant of this error is writing 4407700900123, which keeps the zero after the country code. If your number has a 0 right after the country code, remove it.

Symptom: the chat says the number is not on WhatsApp

Cause: the number is correct in format but has no WhatsApp account. This happens with landlines, old numbers, numbers with a typo, or numbers that were never registered. A number that is longer than 15 digits including the country code is also invalid.

Fix:

  1. Count the digits. If there are more than 15, something is duplicated, often the country code or a leading zero.
  2. Save the number in your phone contacts and check whether it shows up as a WhatsApp contact.
  3. Make sure it is a mobile number that is registered on WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.

If you publish a link for customers, use the same number you actually use to reply on WhatsApp.

Symptom: the pre-filled message is cut off or garbled

Cause: the text after ?text= is not URL-encoded. Spaces, line breaks and some characters need to be encoded to survive in a link.

Fix: use these replacements:

  • Space becomes %20
  • Line break becomes %0A
https://wa.me/34612345678?text=Hello%20there%0AI%20have%20a%20question

Characters such as &, ? and # have special meaning in URLs, so they also need encoding if they appear inside your message. The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to type the message in a generator and copy the result. Remember that nothing is sent automatically. The person clicking sees the text in the chat box first and decides whether to send it.

Symptom: nothing happens on desktop

Cause: on a computer, wa.me links open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. If you do not have the desktop app installed and are not logged in to WhatsApp Web, the chat cannot open directly. The visitor may land on a page asking them to continue to chat or log in.

Fix:

  • Tell desktop visitors what to expect: they may need to log in to WhatsApp Web or install the desktop app.
  • Test your link in a desktop browser, not only on your phone.
  • If most of your audience is on mobile, show a QR code next to the link on desktop pages so people can scan it with their phone camera. Many desktop visitors prefer that to logging in.

The link itself is usually fine in this situation. The missing piece is an app or a session on the device.

Symptom: it works in a browser but not inside Instagram, Facebook or another app

Cause: social and messaging apps often open links in their own built-in browser. These in-app browsers can behave differently from your phone’s regular browser, and sometimes they do not hand the link over to the WhatsApp app properly. The behavior differs between apps and changes with updates, so do not rely on a single fix.

Fix:

  1. Open the same link in your phone’s default browser and see if it works there. If it does, the link is fine and the in-app browser is the problem.
  2. In the app, look for an option to open the page in the external or default browser. Check the current interface, because menu names change.
  3. Where the platform allows it, put the link in a place that opens outside the in-app browser, such as a button in a profile or a link in a bio. Check the platform’s current rules, since they change often.
  4. Add a plain fallback: a visible phone number, or a QR code on a page people can scan from another device.

Test before you publish

Run this short checklist every time you create or change a link:

  1. The URL starts with https://wa.me/ followed by digits only.
  2. The number matches the country examples and has no more than 15 digits.
  3. There is no plus sign, leading zero after the country code, space or dash.
  4. The message, if any, is encoded.
  5. You opened it on your phone and on a desktop.
  6. You opened it from the place where customers will actually find it, such as your bio, email signature or website.
  7. You asked someone with a different phone to try it, ideally someone who is not already in your contacts.

If you have tried the fixes and the link still misbehaves, the fastest route is often to start again. Enter the number with its country code in GenerateWaLink, add your message if you want one, and copy the clean link. The same tool creates a downloadable QR code, and it works in your browser, so the number is not sent to any server. Then run the checklist above once and replace the old link everywhere it was published.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a plus sign in a wa.me link if my number starts with +?

No. The number in a wa.me link must be digits only, so write 34612345678 instead of +34612345678. The plus sign is only a way of showing the international prefix.

Why does my UK number not work in a wa.me link?

You probably kept the leading zero. Drop it and add the country code, so 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123.

Does a wa.me link work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. wa.me links work with both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, as long as the number belongs to a WhatsApp account.

Will the pre-filled message be sent automatically when someone clicks?

No. The text appears in the chat box and the person has to press send. The sender and the recipient both see it before anything goes out.

How do I add a line break to a pre-filled message?

Use %0A where you want the break, and %20 for spaces. For example: ?text=Hello%20there%0AI%20have%20a%20question.
